Scary ghost stories, horror movies, costumes and eating way too many candies…yes, you guessed it, Halloween is right around the corner, literally! I can’t believe how fast this year has flown by! Now it’s that time of year to start Halloween costume prep. What do you have in mind?
Halloween is not a part of my tradition while I was growing up in Thailand. The holidays in Thailand are Buddhist and since Halloween isn’t a Buddhist festival, it never completely made it there. Anyway, if you’ve been in Thailand and you stay in central Bangkok or the other big (tourist) city like Chiang Mai, Phuket or Krabi – you may be able to experience Halloween costume parties, great DJs, and awards at some restaurants and bars. That having been said, I never went to any Halloween parties in Thailand.
Now that I live in the United States, I thought it would be fun to stretch my imagination and share some Halloween outfits you can actually wear to the party and want to wear them again in real life. I know for some people, Halloween means an annual trip to go to Party City or Amazon and drop a few bucks (or more depending on how fancy spooky costume would be! Who would want to show up at a Halloween party in the EXACT costume like last year?). As I’m getting older (hopefully wiser, too!), spending Halloween fund on long-term wardrobe pieces (both splurges and steal) is the best TREAT!
Here are my top 5 fashion-inspired Halloween outfit suggestions for the most memorable characters and looks from some popular movies and TV series (and yesssss…all items created with items your can wear again after Halloween).
Idea 1: Holly Golightly, Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Breakfast at Tiffany’s is undoubtedly one of the most iconic films ever made. Something about this film just melts my heart – perhaps the fashion and the charisma of Audrey Hepburn (she was an iconic actress, talented, radiant and elegant (I don’t think there was a day when she looked less that flawless. Seriously, google her name and look at her photos! You’ll see what I mean!). Here’s what you’ll need to go as Holly Golightly this Halloween: a pair of black Godard-style sunglasses, a black dress, some black gloves, black kitten heels and oh! Don’t forget the sassy wide-brimmed hat with a silk ribbon – classic Holly.

Idea 2: Blair Waldorf, Gossip Girl
I’m a huge fan of Gossip Girl! Blair Waldorf is Upper East Side’s most influential Manhattanie teenager with an ultra-girly headband, mix of patterns, prints and a highly stylish schoolgirl uniform. All you need are a schoolgirl uniform (preferably in a white button down t-shirt with ribbon and a mini black skirt), red leggings, bright colored coat, a preppy headband and you’re good to go.

Idea 3: Carrie Bradshaw, Sex and the City
I’ve watched and rewatched Sex and the City more times than I can count. At one point, my husband bought me the whole DVD set of the TV show (he saw me breathing in and out to Carrie’s life in NYC). There are so many memorable Carrie Bradshaw looks that I love, but the iconic French fashion outfit when she arrived in Paris has to be one of my favorites. Start with the obvious here: the Breton-striped long sleep top (What is more Parisian that Breton stripes?) Toss it on with a tweed blazer, a stripe. full midi skirt and a boater hat like this is guaranteed chicness that will endure in your wardrobe long after Halloween for years to come.

Idea 4: Vivian Ward, Pretty Women
Not considering these beloved fashion staples for Halloween? “Big mistakes. Big. Huge.” Sorry. I simply couldn’t resist quoting these memorable punch lines spoken by Vivian Ward from Pretty Woman. And if you watched Pretty Women like me (why wouldn’t you?), you know that the polka dot dress Vivian worn on the scene of the polo match is the ensemble that is just as fashionable today as it were then. Update your modern Vivian Ward this year with a polka dot printed dress while pulled your hair into a messy updo and top it with a prime sun hat (to create an iconic Vivian look in 1990 film – tie a polka dot scarf for a dramatic head-to-toe polka dot outfit). Swoon.

Idea 5: Elle Woods, Legally Blonde
Do you remember a fashionable blonde sorority queen in the pinkest ensembles back in early 2000s? Yes, I’m talking about Elle Woods from Legally Blonde, who proved smarts could come in all shapes and sizes (or a girl by her pink outfit, too!). So you’ve already known her signature pantone is PINK! To get Elle Woods’ look, find a tailored blazer dress. Add a blingy stilettos and a ‘50s pillbox hat to complete the look. Harvard is waiting for you, pals!
